We were able to start and finish another DIY project for the baby's nursery this past week.
Since I've been wanting to hang some bookshelves in there to house all of the children's books we have accumulated, Chris whipped together two of these pictured below for me:
When I say "whipped together", I literally mean just that!
Using scrap wood and nails he already had in the garage, he was able to make two of these in just under an hour.
This guy is getting good!
The next step was to distress each shelf which I had the pleasure of doing.
Using a hammer, a chain, and basically any other hard object I could find in the garage, I beat the shelves up a bit to give them more of a rustic look.
Lastly, I stained the shelves with the same gray stain we used on the top of the changing table and then added a top coat of polyurethane.
Here they are hung up in the nursery:
Since the shelves are pretty heavy to begin with and the books add even more weight, we used this hardware to ensure that these things won't fall down.
If you don't have the time or ability to make these shelves yourself,
you can find similar ones from this Etsy shop.
The books are a combination of gifts from friends and family and garage sale finds I have picked up over the past few months.
Below the shelves, I have some stuffed animals in this wire hamper that I picked up last year from Home Goods.
It's only a matter of time before our dog Rosie gets her hands on these!
So for now, I'm enjoying seeing them nice and clean and with their heads still attached.
I'm just waiting for a few more things to be completed in the nursery but as soon as it is finished, I'll share a look around the entire room!
In the meantime, you can check out the progress we have made in this room
PS- If you haven't entered the giveaway for a chance to win a Rewined mimosa candle, give it a try!
It ends Friday at 12 A.M. and I'll announce the winner on Saturday.
Thanks for stopping by :)

DeleteI love the rustic look of your shelves!! I had to pin! Also following your lovely blog on Pinterest and Bloglovin!!
ReplyDeleteHow far out to the bookshelves measure from the wall? I would like to make some but am wondering how deep yours are?
ReplyDeleteHi! They are about 5 1/2 inches deep.
DeleteMy husband and I will be making these tomorrow but I will paint them white to go with my sons nursery but I love the rustic look!! Thanks for sharing :)
ReplyDeleteCould you tell me the dimensions of these? My husband and I are making them tomorrow and they are the perfect size!
ReplyDeleteOh I hope I didn't get back to you too late! The dimensions are 28"w x 8"h x 5"d.
DeleteThank you!
DeleteMaybe my first post didn't go through but I had questions about the sizes of wood. I'm hoping to build these today, your work is awesome. I bought 1x4s for the front and back parts and 2x4s for the side but we couldn't find one piece of wood that fits the bottom the way you have it with everything sitting on top misty bc wood isn't the exact size it says. Could you share with me the exact measurement of the bottom piece and if you used something different than I mentioned for the others too? Thank you
DeleteHi Jenni, sorry I'm just seeing this comment now! The bottom piece is 5.5 inches x 28 inches x 1 inch. The front is 3.5 x 28 x 1 and the side pieces are about 4 x 7 x 1.5. The back is actually two pieces put together and each of the back piece is the same as the front one. Does that make sense? Hope this helps and please let me know if you have more questions!
DeleteHello, We loved these shelves to much that e made some of our own. My only question is, with the hardware on the back, does your shelf lean forward? How do you make it stay flush with the wall?
ReplyDeleteThank you
Awesome! They don't really lean forward, and if they do, I've never noticed. The hardware (linked in the post) is awesome and great with the heavy load of books. I highly recommend.
