"Brrrrrr"illiant idea... What to do with your old winter sweater?

Before you toss out an old sweater, consider these quick and easy re-purposing projects my mom and I had fun doing this weekend!

First we started with some old cable-knit sweaters that were ready to go to the consignment shop.
(FYI--If you don't have a sweater you are willing to cut up, try checking out a local thrift store. They always have them!)

Then using my mom's sewing skills, we turned the sweaters into pillows.
Don't they look so similar to these Pottery Barn ones?

With the body part of the sweaters used to make pillows, we had a bunch of sweater sleeves left over.
Instead of tossing the scraps in the garbage, we decided to turn them into wine bottle bags, which make a great hostess gift for the holidays.

If you are sewing machine challenged like me (one of my resolutions for 2014 will be to learn how to sew), you can just hand-stitch the bottom of the bags.

We played around with different ribbons and topped them off with different things like a sprig of holly or a button.

You could also add a pine cone, jingle bell, monogram letter, etc. with just some hot glue.

Oh, and I'm trying out my first giveaway today! I hope it works.
It's for one of these wine bottle sweater bags (wine not included sorry).

  1. I've never re-purposed something, but I love this idea! I've always liked the Pottery Barn pillows and think I just might have to try making my own now!

  2. Love this idea! I also need to learn how to sew. I love changing pillow covers for the season but it can get expensive, this is such a great idea! The wine bottle bag is so cute, I also love giving people a bottle of wine and wrapping it in a new seasonal dishtowel, you just can't have enough dishtowels!
