Art from my heart & how patience is a virtue that I don't have

A week or so ago, I posted here about some Etsy nursery art that I had been admiring.
There are so many cute options out there but the thought of not being able to fill some of the frames in the nursery until the art arrived via snail mail was testing my lack of patience (ridiculous, I know).

So, I decided to try my hand at some DIY art.
I started by purchasing some craft paper from Michaels that matched the colors of the nursery.

Originally I wanted the paper to be punched into anchors or whales but the Michaels by me didn't have a paper puncher in those shapes. I saw some online but as you might guess I was also too impatient for delivery. So, I went with the heart.

Next, I arranged the hearts in a pattern and made sure they were spaced out evenly enough
(no measuring, also too impatient for that, just eye-balling).
Once I was happy with where they were placed, I taped each heart down.

Here is the final product framed:

A super easy and quick project for the impatient ones like me!

Ready oar not, here he comes!

Recently I did an easy DIY project for the baby's bathroom involving re-purposing this oar:

It was a garage sale find that we had hanging in between two closet doors in the guest bedroom of our last place. Since then, it has been sitting in a closet collecting dust until I decided to re-purpose it.

I started by taping off the areas I wanted to paint.

Then, I taped off three areas to create gray stripes.

It looked a little too perfect once I took the tape off so I sanded down the painted parts to give it a little more of a rustic look.
Lastly, I added hooks and hardware on the back to hang it.

Here's the finished product:

I picked up the shark bath mitt here...

...and the gingham bath robe was a gift purchased here.

One more look at the before & after:

I'll share a look around the whole bathroom soon!

1 year blogiversary!

Holy. Cow.
I can't believe it has already been a year since I started this blog.
It's cool that it allows us to look back at all the things we have accomplished in our new home and to have it all documented! It's also scary how quickly time flies by.
Where's the pause button?
In celebration of this 1 year blogiversary, I've compiled the top ten Picket Fence Project posts from this year (based on most pageviews and/or Pinterest re-pins) and have them compiled below (in no particular order) in case you missed them the first time (or liked them so much you couldn't wait to view them again--just kidding)!

(from top, left to right)

1. guest bedroom makeover 2. my friend melissa's gallery wall 3. my closet & jewelry organization
4. DIY coasters 5. DIY fabric shade 6. DIY farmhouse table 7. my brother's and best friend's wedding 8. DIY nursery bookshelves 9. spray-painted shower door 10. nursery progress

So am I up for year #2 of this blog?
I think so!
I told myself that I would keep it up as long as it was enjoyable. As soon as it got in the way or became too much of a burden, I'd stop.
I'm happy to say that hasn't yet happened so I will continue to post, share, and hopefully inspire.
It will be interesting to see if I will be able to keep up my routine of posting every other day once this baby arrives, but I will try my best!

P.S. The Picket Fence Projects now has a Facebook page you can find here.
If you "like" it, it'll keep you up-to-date on new posts and other news!

As always, thanks so much for visiting and have a great weekend :)

Snug as a bug in a rug

Well, I hoped to have our bedroom complete before baby arrives and even though he isn't here quite yet, I definitely don't foresee us completing this room before then.
That's okay though.
I'm learning to cut myself a break when it comes to our to-do list and having it all perfectly complete.
Perfect is over-rated anyway, right?

So, even though our bedroom isn't finished, we are one step closer since I finally found a rug for the room.

I bought it from Rugs Usa, which has ridiculous coupon codes sometimes up to 80% off (my rug was 70% off), making the prices really affordable.
Where else can you get an 8 x 10 rug for under $200?

It's not the snuggliest of rugs but it isn't crazy uncomfortable either.

If you are in search of a rug, it's worth checking out Rugs Usa.
They have pretty much any rug in any color in any size!

So, what's left for this room?

1. We need to paint (as well as pick a color).
Not the wall that we planked but the other 3 walls as well as freshen up all of the trim and woodwork.

2. I want to hang some window treatments and have been toying with the idea of making some out of painter's drop cloth like these.

3. We need an armoire or long dresser of some sort for one of the walls not pictured below.
Chris may build one or we might try to find one at a tag sale.

A quick thanks to Kammy's Korner for featuring our DIY changing table this week!

Have a great day :)

Knock it off!

A couple of weeks ago, I posted about our West Elm island turned kitchen table and how I was waiting on chairs that I recently ordered to arrive.

I really loved the Pottery Barn Tolix cafe chair but if you know me, there's no way I was willing to pay $269 a chair. I love you PB, but come on!
So after some hunting, I found this look-a-like on Overstock for a fraction of the cost.
Can you tell the difference?

Here they are around the table:

Saving money and still getting the look you want is the best feeling!

Have a great day :)
